Thoughts I have…

Sat out on my own in the sea today and a cormorant came flying down the coast, its left wing tip occasionally brushing the sea surface, using the updraft from the death throes of a barely born, ill-formed confusion of waves to propel itself with the minimum of effort to where ever it fancied; and I wondered.

Would they, or any seafaring bird with the ability and inbuilt prescience to glide, prefer a short-range swell where they could hop from half formed wave to half formed wave, or, a long-range swell where they could stick with the same wave for much longer but have a bigger gap to cover (potentially having to flap) to get back out to the next wave…?
